Wounded Print

The Purple Heart. It’s one of only a few medals you hope to never get. When I was wounded, it was during a month that was already fraught with casualties and violence. April of 2004 was the 1st Cavalry’s initiation to the new face of warfare.

To my brothers who have been or are still in the fight, I wish you well. To those wounded, may you persevere over this new challenge, both mentally and physically.

The day I finished this piece was the 9 year anniversary of the day Specialist Justin Johnson died. A therapeutic, if emotionally draining, endeavor.
